| Mali
is primarily an agricultural country, with more than 71.9% of the
population living the countryside and involved in agriculture and
raising animals. Cotton is the country’s largest export resource.
Peanuts, formerly the country’s largest industrial crop, are
gradually losing ground to food crops such as millet and rice, grown
under the auspices of the Office du Niger. In recent years, the
cultivation of potatoes has expanded significantly in the country’s
third region (Sikasso). Mali exports cattle to neighbouring countries.
Gold, which started to be mined a few years ago, is an important
source of foreign currency for the country. Mangos from Mali are
among the best in the world. Exporting them can be a very lucrative
activity.
The country also produces large quantities of a variety of fruits.
It produces spices.
Other sectors
As yet untapped minerals (bauxite, manganese, diamonds, phosphate,
marble, salt, gypsum) represent valuable business opportunities.
Despite tremendous efforts by Malian authorities, the transportation
sector is in acute need of foreign capital.
