Accessible by road and located in
the Mopti region, the Land of the Dogons includes the cercles of
Bandiagara, Douentza, Koro, and Bankass. It
is known for its cliffs (300 to 600 m in height), plateaus, and
plains (Séno plain).
The Dogons sought refuge in this hostile locale as they fled the
Islamization of the mandingue country from which they had originated. They
drove the Thélème people out of their cliff caves
(used today by the Dogons as a necropolis).
Three
categories of villages exist:
In the caves (difficult to reach), on the sides of the cliffs, and
on the plateaus.
As visitors arrive in these villages, they have the impression of
entering a sanctuary with a cultural heritage based on a philosophy
and religion that is extremely rich and complex; this appears to
them both inaccessible and entrancing.
