Mali
is one of the few countries that exports culture to North America.
This cultural vitality has its origins in Malian traditions. A new
generation of talented Malian artists is interpreting these millenary
traditions, which explains the influence that Malian cultural products
are having worldwide.
Salif Keïta, Oumou Sangaré, Ali Farka Touré,
Kar Kar, Habib Koité, Rokia Traoré, Ami Koita, and
Kandia Kouyaté (to name only a few) have spread Malian music
to the four corners of the planet. Our storytelling tradition, of
which our “griots” (troubadours) have been the custodians,
has allowed the country to preserve the wonderful stories that relate
the lives and deeds of the heroes who built the great empires that
preceded modern-day Mali.
